For Kevin Ahern

It’s easy to get on the old Fowler road
The landscape inviting. Two lanes semi-wide
Spanning the farm land connecting horizons
Twixt green fields on the countryside

Til the 40s, the train stopped every day
Opportunity got in on the last load
Now far away, if you seek it today
A long ways away on the old Fowler road

Heading west or heading east
Two directions essentially the same
Connected to the place you have to reach
If opportunity is your aim

Roads have maps and directions
But you must know where you want to go
Opportunity hides in many places
A long ways away on the old Fowler road

Roads and journeys are not the same
A road is just asphalt or stone
But a journey requires movement
You may travel with others, but your journey’s alone

And when you have made your journey
And have the world by the throat
Remember the path you traveled
On the old Fowler road
