I Carry Fowler With Me

In a little house in Illinois
Sitting on a hill
I spent my youth til 17
My head’s there still

I walked a block to go to school
Where I learned to read and write
When winter storms brought snow – No School!
Our hill – a sledder’s delight

Galen, Cindy, Kyle and Wayne
Carmen and Nancy too
Steve, Marcheta, Pam and David
And Gary and Larry whew!

This baker’s dozen of us all grew up there
In America’s great corn zone
Fields of dreams in our backyards
To us, ’twas simply home

Our elementary – 8 grades, 4 rooms
What did those teachers do?
While one grade got instruction
The other one reviewed

Teachers performed daily miracles
Helping us to grow
To this day I thank my lucky stars
I truly admire them so

You don’t need a fancy background
To be a success in life
With good people looking out for you
You can rise to any height

They say it takes a village to raise a child
It’s true – I’m one of those
And the child returns the favor
Carrying the village wherever he or she goes
