I don’t believe in fate or any such thing
I think it comes down to chance
Not exactly a romantic way
To think of romance
Her, from the Himalayas
Me, the rural Midwest
Two people who could have remained
Complete strangers at best
It was so remote a possibility
That we would ever meet
But we did, and 40 years later
We celebrate tonight with friends in Crete
And despite growing up beneath
Very different skies
We’ve always seen the world
With the same eyes
I occasionally buy lottery tickets
And if I ever win the prize
I will have hit the big jackpot
Twice
