(a verse directed at major newspapers)
Newspapers will not publish verse
As if there is some kind of curse
That’s put upon an ed-i-tor
Who opens up the lyric door
I wonder how that came to be
Cuz everywhere I look, I see
Charlie Brown on pages funny
Market numbers, trades of money
There’s cartoons everywhere, no bull
Even on pages political
Obituaries, almanacs, lotteries, Sudoku
Weather, crosswords, TV, and bridge too
All kinds of things for folks to eat
With times and places they can meet
Most papers readily pay the price
To have Dear Abby give advice
There’s even astrology (!) and Find a Word
So why are verses so absurd?
We’re not talking poems deep and dark
But rather fun and on the mark
Like Charles Osgood and Ogden Nash
With fun and off-beat balderdash
I’d be happy to discuss this live
Five four one, nine oh eight, four four six five
Thanks for reading. That is all
I’m looking forward to your call
