Elmer, the elm tree
Told a secret to me
That I happen to know is true
He’s the most amazing tree I ever knew
Who last night,
When the wind was right
Flew
A storm was blowing very hard
And Elmer sitting in our yard
Worried he’d blow down
So Elmer packed his roots up tight
And prepared himself to take a flight
His many leaves caught up the breeze
And Elmer then took off with ease
Flying all over town
High in the sky did Elmer fly
Watching all the world go by
Going everywhere the wind would blow
And when the storm stopped swirling round
Elmer from the sky swooped down
And landed back where he’d started below
He put his roots back carefully in
The earth from where he did begin
His night flight
And he acted like nothing had happened
And no one but me ever knew
That Elmer the elm tree ever flew
I promise his secret I’ll always keep
But I’ll wonder when I go to sleep
Will Elmer fly tonight?
