The Road to Istanbul

(Inspired by a Road Scholar tour in Turkey)

The end of our trip is near
It has been a feast for the eyes
And now for every one of you
I’ve written a wee surprise

We started this trip in Ankara
Twas cold, the snow was bright
Beautiful, just as the trip would be
For us Turkish neophytes

The participants all were wonderful
No problems, frowns or gripin’
But please bear with me one moment
As I pause here to describe ‘em

Claire with a smile, she loves to laugh
John and Marilyn watchers of birds
Jim and Ruth, Canadians
And Sandra has a way with words

Janet from San Clemente
Bill and Linda’s, social science roles
Kathy warm and caring
Marge and Wray with hiking poles

Sarah’s a Spanish teacher
There’s the Wyoming lawyer, Chris
Tom rode the rails to get to us
And Mike’s the geologist

This comprises our Road Scholar group
For all the world to see
Oops, I almost forgot Indira
Who has to put up with me

In traveling through Cappadocia
We saw storks part black, part white
And way up high atop a hill
Stones marked the Hittite site

We saw pottery made by craftsmen
Numerous purchases on the spot
The weather too unpredictable
So balloon rides no one got

Mike spoke of volcanic eruptions
And the process continues still
But still intact is the Flintstone shack
High on Bedrock hill

The underground city of Ozkanok
Was stunning in scope and depth
We won’t forget the Dervishes
With those very circular steps

In Konya, the tomb of Rumi
Antalya, a splendid stop
Perge, the ancient city
Then Claire took a break with a cough

The best preserved Roman theatre
Is in Aspendos, we’re agreein’
Next, the collection of artifacts
In Antalya’s Archeological Museum

I think everyone would agree with me
Every meal on the trip was a winner
Topped by the Akra Brut Hotel’s
Mile long buffet dinner

Pamukkale’s amazing hot springs
Beckoned to us lucky stiffs
We removed our shoes and socks and walked
Upon her snow-like cliffs

We saw so many amazing sites
Surrounding us everywhere
But none of them made us happier than
Being rejoined by Claire

We continued our trip through ruins
That Turkey keeps clean and tidy
Aphrodisias, yet another set
Honoring Aphrodite

Continuing to Kusadasi
We stopped at an ancient village
Where the temple there of Artemis
Most sadly had been pillaged

At the Nakkas carpet-making place
We saw how rugs get knotted
And as for the spiel of the salespeople
Many of us bought it

The Ephesus site next on our list
For tourists, it’s a must
But somehow amongst the chaos there
Shenol kept track of us

And speaking of Shenol,
I can’t finish without describing
The wonderful work he did for us
And Metin’s incredible driving

Our trip is nearing its final stop
What a way to spend two weeks
Collectively we’re as excited as
Shenol seeing Meryl Streep
