(for Neal Gladstone)
With “Song for Us All”
You warmed our hearts
And gave us laughs
With “Dodge Dart”
We remember you in
That “Cool Maroon” suit
And admired the brilliance
Of “Grapefruit”
You told us how to do
“The Best You Can Do”
And touched us deeply
With “Dark Blue”
You’re the “Baby Rainbow”
Who would not be a dish
Dodging a fisherman
Becoming a “Big Fish”
Your “Ordinary Life”
Was unlike any other
And reminded us birthdays
Belong to our mothers
You lost your “Hair”
Had “Oatmeal” to eat
And taught everybody
How to “Sleep Neat”
A trip to the “Landfill”
The “Kitty Holiday”
“Mr. August” and “Throat Man”
And “Country Cliché”
It went by too fast
We miss you so
And wish we could see
Just one more show
By the man who was always
At the top of his game
Painting musical pictures
Too big for a frame
