Why There Are Soldiers

At the parade, a soldier at attention
A symbol of protection
Tightly focused, a pillar of strength
A model of perfection

In the crowd, a young boy
Ten years of age
Admiring his father, the soldier
Iconic on the public stage

Looking up, the boy grabs the waist
Of the man he’s loved since birth
And pulls him tightly to his heart
The most important thing on Earth

The soldier does his duty
The crowd is kept at bay
Before his day is over
One thing left to say

The soldier dad relaxes
Emotions now unfurled
Kissing his son, reaffirming
He’s the most important thing in the world
