‘Twas the Ice Before Christmas

’Twas the ice before Christmas
All over our town
The highways were blocked
And the power lines down

Temperatures had dropped
As the rain hit the air
Creating a coating
Of ice everywhere

The vehicles stuck
Awaiting a tractor
Had drivers all cursing
The cold wind chill factor

Which had dipped very deep
Due to big winter storming
Leaving everyone hoping
For at least local warming

I in my kerchief
And ma in her hat
Looked out at the streets
And said “Ain’t goin’ out in that”

So we settled indoors
I was feeling contented
’Til the guy on TV
With the weather commented

“This is just the beginning”
“Beware what comes next”
“A more frigid cold blast”
“From the polar vortex”

Ma gestured to me
And I knew what that meant
The rest of my holiday
Would not be well spent

Because I then had
Many tasks here to do
From painting the cabinets
To polishing the flue

And what you may wonder
Was such a provoker?
The unfortunate fact
That Hell’s freezing over

Merry Christmas to all
Except me
