A Very Foreign Language

I went into a foreign place
At noon the other day
Hoping I’d prepared myself
On what to do and say

When I got into the meeting
Behind the corporate door
There was a big discussion
Of competency at the core

I asked about just what that meant
They gave an odd translation
Declaring it revolved around
Disruptive innovation

I nodded like I understood
My face turned to a frown
They assured me it would all make sense
If I would just drill down

“Ah, dentistry,” I thought aloud
They looked at me, dismayed
And explained that I should stop and take
A drink of their Kool-Aid

This reinforced the dentist thing
But I declined the beverage
And searched in vain for a pole so I could
Help them with their leverage

No pole could I find anywhere
So I just stood there dyin’
As they declared importantly
“The idea needs some buy-in”

“Oh no,” I thought quite nervously
My ignorance acute
It worsened as I heard them speak
About low-hanging fruit

I decided then I had to leave
And told my corporate hosts
But not before I heard about
The moving of goalposts

That didn’t make much sense at first
Which my puzzled face revealed
But then they told me all about
Their level playing field

When all was done, I left behind
This language hemorrhagic
Some claimed it was strategic
To me it was stratragic
